Sacramento State University comes to Jed Smith! The Sacrament State Urban Teacher Education Center (UTEC) has been located at Jedediah Smith School since 2004. In partnership with Jed Smith School, UTEC prepares future teachers to teach in urban schools and communities, and has prepared over 200 teachers, many of whom end up teaching in the Sacramento City Unified School District.
While the Urban Teacher Education Center has as its main goal the preparation of excellent teachers who are committed to teaching in urban schools, it also operates with an overall vision of community involvement through creating new school and community activities and the strengthening of communities’ efforts to serve children.
Sacramento State’s UTEC students take all of their courses at Jed Smith, observe in classrooms, and the students and their professors have created or participated in many school-wide and community events, such as
- tutoring in language arts and math both during and after school,
- tutoring in the Seavey Circle neighborhood tutoring center,
- working with children in the library and helping to organize the library,
- helping to run the Family Literacy and Family Science Nights
- running a Science Fair
- running a Social Studies Fair
- creating a book exchange and book giveaway
- teaching in the Mathematics, Engineering, and Science Achievement program
- organizing and helping lead the annual 5th-6th grade field trip to Sac State.
UTEC students also serve as student teachers in approximately 12 additional urban schools throughout the Sacramento City Unified School District.
The partnership between Jedediah Smith School, the Seavey Circle Panthers, and the Sacramento State Urban Teacher Education Center has been recognized by the Sacramento City Unified School District School Board for its work in preparing teachers for urban areas. The partnership also won the 2008 California “Quality Partnership Award for Distinguished Service to Children and the Preparation of Teachers.”
